Nepal’s diverse geography, from the towering Himalayas in the north to the Gangetic plains in the south, creates a rich environment for biodiversity, including around 185 fish species such as trout, catfish, murrel, rainbow trout, common trout, and carp. The country’s varied climate and topography provide ideal fishing conditions, with the best seasons being from February to May and October to November.
Prominent fishing spots include the Karnali, Seti, and Babai rivers in Bardiya, river confluences in Chitwan, Dolalghat, and the lakes of Pokhara. The Karnali River is especially famous for the prized Golden Mahseer. Fishing in mountain streams offers a chance to catch various trout species, while the rivers and lakes in the Himalayas and Terai region are good for large catfish, murrel, and carp. However, the population of valued species like the Mahseer is rapidly declining, particularly in the Geruwa River.
